Further to our recent Bookcase analogy post. Have you ever come across the Fairy Lights video?
The Dementia Friends Fairy Lights analogy video is a non-scientific explanation to help anyone understand how memories are stored and how they might be affected by dementia.
This is a explanation to help understand
- a) how memories are stored in the brain
- b) how these memories/feelings can be affected when dementia is involved and
- c) how your understanding of this can help you to support someone with dementia, enabling them to live well
What is dementia?
The term ‘dementia’ is used to describe the symptoms that occur when the brain is affected by specific diseases and conditions. Symptoms of dementia include loss of memory, confusion and problems with speech and understanding.
A Dementia Friend learns a little bit more about what it’s like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action – anyone of any age can be a Dementia Friend.
Dementia Friends Information Sessions are run by volunteer Dementia Friends Champions, who are trained and supported by Alzheimer’s Society. Each Information Session lasts around one hour. You will learn more about dementia and how you can help to create dementia friendly communities. There are information sessions running across England and Wales, including here in Prestatyn.
